Valentina Blackhorse was a beloved community leader who promoted Navajo culture and education. Her sister says she had hoped to enter politics in the future. Blackhorse may have contracted the virus while caring for her partner, Robby Jones, a detention officer for the Navajo Department of Corrections, who says he could have been exposed at work. She died just one day after her coronavirus test came back positive. Navajo Nation has been hit hard by the pandemic, reporting over 2,000 cases of COVID-19 and at least 70 deaths.
