Directed by German twin brothers Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein, this simple black and white narrative won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Although the film may seem a little creepy as a group of identical men in coats balance precariously on a platform while sound effects amplify every movement, the animation is so well executed that it works as a unique allegory about the dangers of greed and competition.
