Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (Educational Assessment in an Information Age)

Rapid—and seemingly accelerating—changes in the economies of developed nations are having a proportional effect on the skill sets required of workers in many new jobs. Work environments are often technology-heavy, while problems are frequently ill-defined and tackled by multidisciplinary teams. This book contains insights based on research conducted as part of a major international project supported by Cisco, Intel and Microsoft. It faces these new working environments head-on, delineating new ways of thinking about ‘21st-century’ skills and including operational definitions of those skills. The authors focus too on fresh approaches to educational assessment, and present methodological and technological solutions to the barriers that hinder ICT-based assessments of these skills, whether in large-scale surveys or classrooms. Equally committed to defining its terms and providing practical solutions, and including international perspectives and comparative evaluations of assessment methodology and policy, this volume tackles an issue at the top of most educationalists’ agendas.
Google lança Project Blocks para ensinar programação a crianças

O Google anunciou nesta segunda-feira (27) o Projeto Blocks que tem como objetivo criar um hardware aberto para que crianças tenham experiências físicas de programação.
O projeto é resultado de uma pesquisa colaborativa entre o Google, a IDEO e o professor da Universidade de Stanford, o brasileiro Paulo Blikstein.
Segundo o Google, a proposta do Project Blocks é tornar a programação palpável, também conhecida como programação tangível, para crianças poderem expressar ideias que de outra forma não expressariam.
Em parceria com a IDEO, a equipe do Project Blocks criou um dispositivo de demonstração chamado Coding Kit que mostra como designers, desenvolvedores e pesquisadores podem fazer uso do sistema. Ele permite o ensinamento de conceitos básicos de programação, juntando blocos de código para criar um conjunto de instruções que serão enviadas para controlar brinquedos e outros dispositivos conectados, desde um tablet a um robô que desenha ou ferramentas educacionais como o Lego Education WeDo 2.0.
Nesta primeira etapa do projeto, o equipe busca educadores, colaboradores, pais e pesquisadores de todo o mundo que gostariam de contribuir com a pesquisa. A participação é feita remotamente. As inscrições podem ser feitas neste link.

Abandoned Xbox One TV DVR Feature Not Ruled out for the Future

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it was, at least temporarily, cancelling its plans to introduce TV DVR functionality on Xbox One. Officially, Microsoft said the feature was “on hold.” Now, Xbox general manager Dave McCarthy has shared some further insight into why Microsoft did away with the feature and teased that it could return someday.
“Those are always tough decisions,” McCarthy told GameSpot about putting Xbox One TV DVR on hold. “You kind of have to prioritize where you’re focusing your time.”
McCarthy pointed out that Xbox One already has “a lot” of media support, including streaming services like Netflix and video-on-demand options. Additionally, the Xbox One supports over-the-air TV (with an adapter sold separately).
Currently, the Xbox One allows users to watch live TV, but the system itself does not support recording functionality. Instead, that process is handled by your existing cable box.
During Gamescom last year, Microsoft announced that the free TV DVR functionality would launch in 2016. It was planned to work with the Xbox App SmartGlass app to allow users to schedule recordings on the go. It was also going to support Windows 10, allowing you to watch your recordings on a PC or any other connected device.
TV DVR could eventually come to Xbox One, McCarthy teased. People who want this feature should let Microsoft know by voting for the idea on the Xbox Feedback site.
“We listen,” he said. “We look at that User Feedback site on a regular basis and try and respond to what people want the most. I wouldn’t rule it out entirely, over time.”

Adeus McAfee? Intel pode vender sua divisão de segurança

A Intel considera vender sua divisão de segurança. O movimento se conectaria a um interesse da fabricante em manter o foco na produção de chips orientados a aplicações de cloud computing e dispositivos conectados para Internet das Coisas.
Segundo reportagem do Financial Times, a companhia estaria em conversas com alguns bancos para buscar um novo rumo para sua divisão de cibersegurança, no que poderia ser um dos maiores negócios do segmento já registrados até então.
O jornal indica que um grupo de investidores privados poderia unir forças para comprar a operação por um preço semelhante ou superior ao pago pela Intel. A empresa preferiu não comentar a possibilidade.
Grande parte das soluções de proteção da gigante vieram da aquisição da McAfee, por US$ 7,7 bilhões em 2010. O plano era embarcar elementos de segurança nos chips. O discurso, na ocasião é que, com o aumento das superfícies computacionais. Essa amplitude requer uma abordagem mais ampla de proteção.
