“Pangur Bán” ~ The Gift of a 9th Century Irish Poem Revisited in “The White Cat and the Monk” & “The Secret of the Kells”

THE POET BY DAY

The White Cat and the Monk was a 2016 Christmas gift to me from my son and daughter-in-law. It’s a charmingly illustrated retelling of an old Irish poem, PangurBán, a lovely gift and a lovely addition to my bookshelves.

I wasn’t familiar with the poem, so the gift inspired – as such gifts are want to do – a few hours of pleasurable reading and research, an effort lightly akin to the endeavors of the anonymous but renown author of the poem. Pangur Bán was written by a 9th Century monk somewhere inside or in the vicinity of Reichenau Abby, which is on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance in the south of Germany.

The page of the Reichenau Primer on which Pangur Bán is written. It is now housed in St. Paul’s Abbey – a Benedictine Abby – in the Lavanttal, a market town in Carinthia, Austria. (public domain photograph)

Renaissance Artists of Venice Part 2

5 de Maio de 2017, 7:39, por O LADO ESCURO DA LUA

SaylingAway

In Part 1 on the Renaissance artists of Venice, I mentioned that they differed from some of the Florentine artists in that they painted during the High Renaissance and they used oil at their medium.

The North Carolina Museum of Art allowed visitors to take pictures of the art work, but I have to admit my phone didn’t do a very good job. So I will use the artists and find the art on line. The three artists who were featured were Titian, Bellini, and Carpaccio.

Titian Self portrait

Titian is perhaps the most famous of all the Venetian Renaissance painters.  He was born Tiziano Vecelli and  was one of the most versatile of Italian painters, equally adept with landscapes, portraits, religious subjects and mythology. His use of color with oils exerted a profound influence on other painters during the Renaissance but also on future generations of artists. His artistry…

Dessert for a celebration

5 de Maio de 2017, 7:38, por O LADO ESCURO DA LUA

Cooking without Limits

Who doesn’t love celebrations? Today some of you celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I will join them with a great dessert I made a few days ago especially for my husband. Has alcohol in it and it is great.

Ingredients:

  • Chocolate mousse
  • Coconut flakes
  • Biscuits for decoration
  • Walnuts
  • Almond liqueur

Directions:

Mix the chocolate mousse with the liqueur. Don’t make it to liquid and to strong. I used a chocolate mousse I made and has already liqueur in it.

In a cognac glass I start putting a layer of chocolate mousse and then one of coconut flakes. After three layers add the walnuts and decorate with the biscuit.

Have fun and enjoy!
