Guatemala faces a historic dilemma: if it does not leave the old patterns of ‘development’ based on the extraction of natural wealth, environmental predation and exploitation of cheap labour, and turn its gaze towards more creative and inclusive forms of production, democratize its democracy and make the distribution of wealth and political power more equitable, we will - soon - arrive at an ungovernable society, fueled by conflict. The SDGs require a huge country effort, with bold decisions, guided by their best men and women, where equity and social justice are the founding criteria.

Nearly 830,000 women in Bulgaria are at risk of poverty, of these 33 percent are older than 65 years; the comparable figures for men are 697,000 and 17 percent. More than half of Bulgarian pensioners live with monthly payments below poverty line. Bulgaria is also the EU member state in which children face the highest risk of poverty and social exclusion. Eurostat data for 2016 reveal that 43.7 percent of children live in low-income households whose earnings are based on seasonal or other types of precarious workers.
At the same time the country is the EU member state with the lowest GDP per capita in 2016, with limited expenditure on social protection and faces adverse demographic trends, as well as persistent labour market problems. Wages are catching up from a very low level and have been pushed by an increasing labour shortage. Bulgaria’s wage level is still the lowest among EU countries although it has been increasing with accelerated speed since EU accession in 2007.

Cooperativas: memoria obrera y utilidad
CategoríasPolicy Making in a Globalized World: Is Economic Growth the Appropriate Driver? An Example from Mesoamerica
August 21, 2017 21:00This think piece traces transnational influences in national-level economic policies and their impacts on one municipality in Mesoamerica. Policy influences that emphasize economic growth, and propose “modernization” and market-based solutions led by the private sector, are found to undermine resilience at both household and community levels, and pose threats to the sustainable livelihoods generated by the activities and practices historically engaged in by the population. The policy implications are relevant across the region in question, and far beyond.
